Reclaiming Your Balance in a World of Overwhelm
It's hard to deny the weight of the world right now. Many of us are grappling with constant cycles of alarming news and social media updates, and perhaps have slipped into the habit of doomscrolling. Coupled with the uncertainty and, for many, the distress arising from the current geopolitical climate, it's understandable that exhaustion, worry, and burnout are pervasive. You may be facing a layoff, navigating a demanding career in tech, confronting challenges in the healthcare industry, or striving to make a difference in the non-profit sector; these external pressures amplify the internal strain.
I understand. I've been there myself. After a decade immersed in the tech industry, I experienced the weight of burnout firsthand, and that was before the current levels of societal stress. It was a wake-up call, a moment of reckoning that led me to realize I needed to change careers and the habits that were bogging me down and keeping me from focusing on what really matters.
Drawing upon my unique background—18 years as a Hindu monk, cultivating a deep understanding of the mind and sustainable inner peace, and my training as a professional Co-Active coach—I offer a holistic approach. It's not about ignoring the challenges around us, but about finding our footing within them.
Burnout often stems from a combination of factors, exacerbated by our current environment:
Constant Exposure to Negativity and External Stressors: The relentless stream of concerning news, social media updates, and the current climate of political and societal upheaval can together trigger anxiety and a feeling of instability.
The Illusion of Control: Feeling overwhelmed by global issues can make our own lives feel insignificant, yet we still carry the weight of daily responsibilities.
Unhealthy Habits: Turning to screens for comfort can lead to sleep disruption and further emotional drain. An internal drive for flawlessness can create relentless self-criticism and unsustainable levels of effort.
The "Get It All Done" Mentality: The pervasive societal expectation to be constantly productive and manage everything flawlessly adds immense pressure and contributes to feeling overwhelmed.
Despite the chaos around us, I believe we retain a fundamental responsibility for our own lives and the impact we have on those directly connected to us. For me, one of the most powerful responses to overwhelming times is to focus on what positive influence I can have—in my personal relationships and in my professional work with clients.
As we explored in my previous blog post, "How to Focus on What Matters," true fulfillment comes from aligning your actions with your deepest values, even amidst external turmoil. And as we discussed in "Four Thousand Weeks," time is a precious commodity, urging us to invest it in what truly nourishes us and those around us.
Coaching can provide a space to:
Examine current habits, identifying those we wish to break and consciously cultivating new, supportive ones, including developing strategies for managing news consumption and setting healthy boundaries with social media.
Process feelings of anxiety and uncertainty related to current events.
Reconnect with your personal values and identify what truly matters to you.
Focus your energy on positive actions within your sphere of influence.
Cultivate stronger connections with the people in your life.
Rediscover your passion and purpose, fueling your ability to navigate challenges.
I believe that one of the most meaningful forms of protest in our current climate is to actively care for ourselves and each other, and to pursue what is most important to us with intention and energy.
